SPH3U: Physics, University Preparation

About Course

The Course, Physics (Grade 11) for University Preparation, is planned to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to meet the entrance precondition for university programs. This course progresses students’ comprehension of the unembellished perceptions of Physics. Students will inquire into the fields of Kinematics with an emphasis on Linear Motion. They will explore various kinds of Forces and their activation laws. Transformation of Energy for Society will be another area for them to scrutinize. Moreover, the acquaintance of the Properties of Mechanical Waves and Sound will enrich their ability to exercise the knowledge in practical life. The knowledge about Electricity is another fundamental foundation for further studies in universities. Lastly studying Magnetism will demonstrate their deeper comprehension about different aspects of magnetic energy. They will enhance their scientific investigation skills as they assess the Laws of Physics. In addition to that, they will learn to analyse the interrelationship between Physics and Technology along with considering the impact of application of Physics in the society and environment.

Unit 2: Forces

Unit 3: Energy and Society
By the end of this unit, students will learn to analyse technologies that apply principles and concepts related to transformations of energy into different forms. They will assess the large impact of technology on society and environment. Not only that, students will comprehend the process of investigations of energy transformations and the law of conservation of energy. As a consequence, they will be able to solve related problems. Lastly, students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of work, efficiency, power, gravitational potential energy, kinetic energy, nuclear energy, and thermal energy and its transfer in to heat.

Unit 4: Waves and Sounds
By the end of this unit, students will be able to establish an understanding of the properties of mechanical waves and sound. They will learn the principles of production, transmission, interaction, and reception of waves and sound. Then students will learn to demonstrate the technology of mechanical waves and sound effects in the society and environment. Also, they will recognize how these effects can negatively impact the society and will also assess various ways to reduce their negative sequels. Lastly, they will explore the properties of mechanical waves and sound, both in qualitative and quantitative terms.

Unit 5: Electricity and Magnetism
By the end of this unit, students will learn to investigate the social, economic and environmental impact of electrical energy. They will study about the production and technologies that relate to electromagnetism, and thereby, recommend various ways to recover the sustainability of production of electrical energy. Besides, students will be able to investigate, in qualitative and quantitative terms, magnetic fields and electric circuits, and therefore, will be able to solve related problems. Finally, they will be able demonstrate an understanding of the properties of magnetic fields, the principles of current and electron flow, and the operation of selected technologies that practice these properties. The principles to produce and transmit electrical energy is another very important scope that students will learn from this module.
