CSD06: Cognitive Skill Development
This course is designed for Grade 6 students to teach Cognitive development skills by addressing the formal operational stage at age 11 year. Children at this age are able to demonstrate abstract thinking. For example, they can understand shades of grey, wrestle with abstract concepts like love or justice, and formulate values based on thinking and analysing as opposed to only by feeling or experiencing. Children 11 years old and older fall into Piaget’s formal operational stage. A milestone of this period is using symbols to understand abstract concepts. Not only that, but older kids and adults can also think about multiple variables and come up with hypotheses based on previous knowledge. “Due to hormonal changes and additional challenges, this age group shows mood swings, low self-esteem, depression, and aggression. Children will learn how to deal with the world around them. They should learn to share feelings and personnel matter with parents first and then friends. Development during this period will centre on how children process language, literacy and creative arts. They will move from always viewing something in a concrete way (just the facts) to being able to look at things with an abstract approach (having multiple meanings).
